On February 1st, Elizabeth Edward gave us a talk on “Bruges & Belgium – a Travelogue”. Elizabeth described her experiences from a series of holidays of an under-rated country, easily accessible from UK. She showed us well-known towns and cities, like Bruges, Ypres and Brussels but also less-visited places like Damme, Ostend, Ghent and Antwerp.
She pointed out beautiful towns with magnificent 13th century Gothic architecture and often World Heritage status. Fine churches and cathedrals full of art, wonderful statues and wooden carvings – and often carillon bells pealing out over lovely medieval town squares.
Beyond the tourist magnets, good trams and trains allow frequent and rapid access to lovely small towns and to a North Sea coastline, all offering good sightseeing experiences. In questions, the only omission to the talk was considered to be the famous Belgian beer!
