On March 1st, David Davies gave a very enjoyable talk entitled “Britain at Ease (1945-59).
Covering this period when most of the audience were young children, David talked in a relaxed and informal manner, and showed slides that brought back a period of austerity, queuing, shortages, rationing and ‘make do and mend.’
Happy times of simple pleasures like gardening, with little money in the pockets, and a limited wardrobe of clothes, but holiday camps took ration books, and shorter working weeks enabled more leisure time.
People enjoyed radios and cinemas before TVs arrived, and rode cycles and motorbikes before cars became available and affordable. Having more, and better-quality clothing made life more ‘modern’.
Our next Club meeting on March 15th will be a buffet and the club’s AGM, and the next talk will be on April 5th when Alan Kershaw will talk about “Mercy Ships.”
