Sorry for the short notice, but I’m afraid that we’ve to change the speaker and subject for the talk on 3rd April.
The speaker will now be Jane McKeown, who will be talking on “Historical Events in South Africa”. Wives and/or partners will still be very welcome at the meeting.
On March 6th, Club member Lothar Trinogga talked to us about a recent visit he made to trace his ancestry.
Lothar was born in Leverkusen, a city to the North of Cologne, Germany. His great grandfather was a farmer only 20 miles from the Russian Border, near the town of Treuberg (East Prussia), renamed Olecko (Poland) after WW2 when the area was divided between Poland and Russia. This made tracing people and places much more complex.
The old farmhouse was gone, but from photographs he was able to identify the location precisely, and he found a neglected family graveyard with gravestones for his great grandparents.
Lothar related the amazing escape of his father, a soldier fighting for Germany in WW2, from an advancing Russian army. He walked 1000 kms alone, south to Cologne, arriving in an emaciated condition unrecognisable to Lothar’s grandfather. All his father’s colleagues died in the Russian prison camps.
Those who will there will remember with awe and admiration Brian Bebbington’s talk, describing the history of the Club in “verse”. He has now given his permission for his ode to be published on the website, which I have duly done. You can find it here.

There are still places available for the traditional carol concert and buffet supper at The Harrogate Club. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so before the event is full. After all, where else do you get the chance to sing While Shepherds Watched to the tune of Ilkla Moor Baht ‘at? More details are here.
Don’t forget – wives, partners, friends are all welcome at this most convivial of events.
Please note that the date of this year’s Christmas Lunch has been changed to 7th December, at the Pavilions of Harrogate. This means that we no longer have the Lunch and the Carol Concert (14 Dec) happening on consecutive days.
Details about the lunch will be distributed in the near future, but the available information is also here.
This is to confirm that, despite rumours to the contrary, there IS a meeting next Wednesday, 17th August. At it, Trevor Moody will be giving us a talk on Wentworth Woodhouse.
Just a quick reminder – there’s no Probus meeting on 26 June – the next one will be on 6th July, when there will be a talk from Abbey Davis on “Yorkshire Cancer Research”
